On the 10th of November 2025, the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), the largest optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the biggest in the world celebrated its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of remarkable growth, scientific achievements and far-reaching impact. SALT stands as a flagship of South African science, a true beacon of excellence that has shaped and elevated our astronomy community, while strengthening our global standing in science.
The event was hosted by Prof Rosalind Skelton, the Managing Director of NRF-SAAO, and brought together government leaders, scientists, and community representatives to honour SALT’s remarkable 20-year journey.


Prof. Chaboyer, Chair of the SALT Foundation, opened the proceedings, followed by the Executive Mayor of the Namaqua District, Mr Mervin Cloete, who spoke about the importance of advocating for students in the region and how much SALT means to the local community. Prof. Chaboyer emphasised the potential that young people hold and expressed hope that more students would be inspired and supported to take part in scientific spaces, gaining valuable knowledge in science, collaboration, and astronomy.
Prof. Mosa Moshabela, former NRF Board Chairperson, highlighted the significance of this milestone not just for astronomy, but for South Africa and beyond. He described SALT as a symbol of what is possible when vision, collaboration, and commitment come together. Reflecting on its journey from conception to construction, Prof Mosa Moshabela acknowledged the National Research Foundation (NRF) for its continuous support, noting that investments in science deliver meaningful impact for the country.
Adding to his speech, he also recognised the unwavering support of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), emphasising that through focused investments, the NRF and SALT have played a vital role in driving development, innovation, and scientific excellence in South Africa.
The partnerships mentioned by both the executive mayor and Prof. Moshabela reflected on the conception of SALT as a scientific ambition and a decision of courage by those in leadership and governance, representing a conviction that South Africa could build and sustain a world-class research facility and, through that redefine its place in science. Dr. Encarni Romero Colmenero, the SALT Director, also shared inspiring words on the importance of scientific ambition, underscoring how SALT stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, uniting engineers, visionaries, and scientists in pursuit of a shared goal of advancing human knowledge.

The celebration not only marked two decades of discovery but also reaffirmed SALT’s legacy as a cornerstone of South African science, one that continues to inspire future generations and strengthen the bond between science and society. A cornerstone of SALT’s success lies in the partnerships it has built and sustained over the years with a community of astronomers, engineers, and stakeholders who have worked together to turn ideas into reality. Two decades later, the results of those collaborations are clear for all to see.
In their presentations, Dr. Itumeleng Monang and Professor Saurabh Jha emphasised the importance of continuing to train and nurturing the next generation of scientists and engineers, ensuring that the foundation built by SALT remains strong and continues to evolve.
Adding to the significance of the day was the presence of the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, the Honourable Dr. Nomalungelo Gina. Her attendance brought a sense of national recognition to the event, reinforcing the government’s ongoing commitment to science and innovation in South Africa. Her remarks touched on emerging plans in science and technology and what the future may possibly look like for science. She highlighted the importance of investing in research and youth development, which are crucial to keeping South Africa at the forefront of global scientific advancement.
The event presented a sense of pride and optimism for the future, leaving attendees inspired by SALT’s achievements and confident in its continued role in advancing astronomical research and scientific collaboration. Twenty years of SALT have also demonstrated what is possible with commitment, teamwork, and vision. The goal of the event was to inspire the new generation to dream greater, reach beyond, and keep elevating South Africa’s position among the stars.
